GRINDING WHEELS
When Grinding Rubber, the compound can quickly build up of rubber on the face of the Grinding Wheel. The friction then generated by the rubber-on-rubber contact, as the wheel cuts, combined with the poor thermal conductivity of rubber, lead to excessive heat generation and difficulty in the Grinding process.
Heat build up can lead to potentially lethal wheel cracking and breakage.
This problem manifests itself most acutely when vitrified wheels are used to grind soft rubbers.
For this reason, Rolmacon Global are hesitant to supply vitrified grinding wheels for this application.
These compounds are normally tacky and extremely elastic, leading them to clog the face of a grinding wheel very rapidly; causing the excessive heat generation and the associated issues.
Typical materials of this type include EPDM, Chloroprene (Neoprene), Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene Rubber (Hypalon), Polyurethane rubber etc. Hardiness in the region of 30-50 Shore A are not uncommon.
Much depends on the hardness of the rubber to be ground. In general, the harder the rubber, the easier it is. An ebonite can be ground relatively easily with a conventionally structured vitrified wheel. For other harder rubbers, e.g. 80-90 Shore A Fluorocarbon elastomers, a soft resin-bonded wheel can be used. Recommendation C46-K7-B
The most effective, and safest, way to grind these materials is with a resin-bonded bubble alumina wheel. The very high porosity of this wheel type allows the wheel to continue cutting, without clogging the face. The porosity also allows heat dissipation, reducing the incidence of cracking and breakage.

For Finishing of Soft Rubber WBA46-K-BB
In addition, Vitrified Wheels, Flap Wheels, Deburring Wheels and Wire Wheels are also available.
The very soft rubbers, commonly used in the offset-printing industry, present the greatest difficulty when grinding.
